The Fragrance of Sweet-Grass: L.M. Montgomery's Heroines and the Pursuit of Romance

The Fragrance of Sweet-Grass: L.M. Montgomery's Heroines and the Pursuit of Romance by Elizabeth Rollins Epperly

The Fragrance of Sweet-Grass: L.M. Montgomery's Heroines and the Pursuit of Romance by Elizabeth Rollins Epperly was published by the University of Toronto Press in 1992. This early work of literary criticism on L.M. Montgomery's writings examines the lives of Montgomery's heroines and how her characters seek happiness and romance. A second edition of the book was published in 2014 with a new preface by the author.

Here is the description of the book from its 1993 cover:

Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction.

Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly questions the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience.

A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars.

'Now you don't have to hide that Montgomery novel when an intellectual friend drops by. Flaunt it and enjoy.'
Patricia Morley, Ottawa Citizen

Here is the description of the book from the 2014 edition:

When it originally appeared, Elizabeth Rollins Epperly’s The Fragrance of Sweet-Grass was one of the first challenges to the idea that L.M. Montgomery’s books were unworthy of serious study. Examining all of Montgomery’s fiction, Epperly argues that Montgomery was much more than a master of the romance genre and that, through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions, she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. Focusing on Montgomery’s memorable heroines, from Anne Shirley to Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner, Epperly demonstrates that Montgomery deserves a place in the literary canon not just as the creator of Anne of Green Gables but as an artist in her chosen profession.

Since its publication more than twenty years ago, The Fragrance of Sweet-Grass has become a favourite of scholars, writers, and Montgomery fans. This new edition adds a preface in which Epperly discusses the book’s contribution to the ongoing research on the life and writing of L.M. Montgomery, reflects on how Montgomery studies have flourished over the past two decades, and suggests new ways to approach and explore the Canadian writer’s work.

L.M. Montgomery

L.M. Montgomery by Genevieve Wiggins

L.M. Montgomery by Genevieve Wiggins was published by Twayne Publishers in 1992. The book is volume 834 in Twayne's World Author Series, and it was edited by Ruth K. MacDonald, who Wiggins describes in her preface as a "kindred spirit." The volume includes biographical information on L.M. Montgomery and literary criticism of Montgomery's novels, short stories, and poetry. Wiggins notes in her preface that, "This book is the first full-length critical study of the works of L.M. Montgomery and the first extensive study of her work by a non-Canadian."

Here is the description of the book from its dust cover:

The early promise Montgomery displayed in Anne of Green Gables was fulfilled in many ways. She pursued her writing career with indefatigable determination, publishing 20 novels as well as short stories and poems. Montgomery revitalized the ever-popular orphan story, curtailing its customary sentimentality and creating believable protagonists who are appealingly honest and not always well behaved. A lifelong lover of nature, Montgomery was gifted in her ability to convey a sense of place, especially the rural Canada of her youth.

The Annotated Anne of Green Gables

The Annotated Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery and edited by Wendy E. Barry, Margaret Anne Doody, and Mary E. Doody Jones

The Annotated Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery and edited by Wendy E. Barry, Margaret Anne Doody, and Mary E. Doody Jones was published by the Oxford University Press in August 1997. This book was the first fully annotated edition of the novel, and it features explanatory notes throughout the text. The volume includes a chronology of L.M. Montgomery's life, a description of the book's publication, and details on the autobiographical connections between L.M. Montgomery and Anne Shirley. In the appendices, the editors reveal the novel's wide-ranging literary and cultural allusions as well as information on the geography and history of Prince Edward Island. In addition, there are in-depth details on the time period in which the novel was set, so modern readers can gain insight to Anne's world.

Here is the description of the volume from the Oxford University Press:

Since its publication in 1908, Anne of Green Gables has been a continuous international best-seller, enjoying successful television adaptations on PBS and The Disney Channel, and captivating children and adults alike with the irresistible charms of its remarkable heroine, Anne Shirley. This wildly imaginative, red-headed chatterbox tries to fit into the narrow confines of Victorian expectations, but her exuberant spirit keeps leaping delightfully beyond the bounds. Indeed, when Maud Montgomery decided to reject the sermonizing formulas of the children's books of her day, she brought to life a character much closer to Jane Eyre, David Copperfield, and Tom Sawyer--also orphans, like Anne--than to the self-sacrificing, conformist heroines then in demand. In doing so, Montgomery subtly questioned the values of her society--the stifling restraints of its religion and most especially its treatment of women--while giving readers all the pleasures of her considerable story-telling gifts.

Now, in this first fully annotated edition of Anne of Green Gables, readers will appreciate more clearly than ever before the scope and depth of this extraordinary novel. Editors Margaret Anne Doody, Mary Doody Jones, and Wendy Barry provide a richly illustrated, completely revised text, along with hundreds of notes describing the real-life characters and settings Anne encounters, the autobiographical connections between Anne and Maud Montgomery, and the book's astonishing range of literary, biblical, and mythological references. Additional essays offer fascinating background information on such topics as the geography and settlement of Prince Edward Island (where Anne takes place); the education, orphanages, music, and literature of Anne's time; and the horticulture, homemade artifacts, and food preparation that are so prevalent in the story. Margaret Anne Doody supplies a comprehensive introduction, which situates the novel in its literary and social contexts, explores those aspects of Montgomery's life most relevant to the story, examines revisions in the manuscripts, and provides an overall sense of both the impulses that drove Montgomery to write Anne of Green Gables and the larger concerns it dramatizes so compellingly. This edition also contains a chronology of Montgomery's life, an extensive bibliography, songs and poems that appear in the text, and a selection of original reviews of the book. This wealth of material enables readers to grasp the marvelous multi-layeredness of the novel and to understand more fully its place in both its own time and in ours.

Elegantly and beautifully designed, with generous illustrations from previous editions, photographs of the places the novel inhabits, and explanatory drawings that reproduce the texture of Anne's world, The Annotated Anne of Green Gables is a major event in the publishing history of one of the world's most charming stories.

Reviews (see additional reviews)

"Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables has reached the status of both children's literary classic and cult phenomenon.... For those unable to visit her home, three serious scholars have annotated the beloved work.... Many period photographs add to the coverage, and the research appears to be so thorough that it seems unlikely that a revised edition of this work will ever be necessary. Those who worship at the feet of the divine Anne Shirley may find that this volume will satisfy all their desires for adulation and information."
-The Horn Book Inc

"There's plenty here for scholars and fans; this edition should not be relegated to the reference shelves."
-Kirkus Reviews

Spirit of Place: Lucy Maud Montgomery and Prince Edward Island

Spirit of Place: Lucy Maud Montgomery and Prince Edward Island edited by Francis W.P. Bolger with photography by Wayne Barrett and Anne MacKay

Spirit of Place: Lucy Maud Montgomery and Prince Edward Island is a book edited by Francis W.P. Bolger with photography by Wayne Barrett and Anne MacKay. The 96-page coffee table book was published by Oxford University Press Canada in 1982. The book begins with an introduction about L.M. Montgomery's life and literary career, and it describes her love of Prince Edward Island. Following the introduction, the main text contains quotations that Francis W.P. Bolger selected from L.M. Montgomery's autobiography, letters, and unpublished diaries about Prince Edward Island. L.M. Montgomery's quotes are accompanied by 86 glossy color photographs of Prince Edward Island by Wayne Barrett and Anne MacKay.

Here is the book's description from its inner jacket:

LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY, the world-famous author of Anne of Green Gables, had a deep and passionate affection for the pastoral serenity and tranquil beauty of her native Island. ‘Old Prince Edward Island’, she wrote, 'is a good place in which to be born—a good place in which to spend a childhood. I can think of none better...Elsewhere are more lavish landscapes and grander scenery; but for chaste, restful loveliness it is unsurpassed.’ She went on to say, ‘And yet we cannot define the charm of Prince Edward Island in terms of land or sea. It is too elusive—too subtle. For lands have personalities just as well as human beings; and to know that personality you must live in the land and companion it and draw sustenance of body and spirit from it; so only can you know a land and be known of it.’

Spirit of Place is a pictorial study of the Prince Edward Island that Lucy Maud knew and loved. Passages from her autobiography and from her voluminous personal correspondence supply the text prepared by Francis W.P. Bolger, and the photographs by Wayne Barrett and Anne MacKay have been taken specially to illustrate the landscape she described. Word and picture together portray the Island that was always Lucy Maud Montgomery’s inspiration and strength.

The Years Before Anne

The Years Before Anne by Francis W.P. Bolger

The Years Before Anne is a biography by Francis W.P. Bolger about L.M. Montgomery's early career prior to the publication of Anne of Green Gables in 1908. The book was first published in 1974 by The Prince Edward Island Heritage Foundation, and it has since been reprinted by Nimbus Publishing. In his preface to the book, Bolger wrote, "The year 1974 marks the centenary of the birth of Lucy Maud Montgomery. This book is written as a humble tribute to the woman who receives and eminently deserves recognition as Prince Edward Island's most famous international personage."

Bolger's book contains a treasure trove of primary source research on L.M. Montgomery's early life and writing career. He includes letters written by L.M. Montgomery to her dear friend Penzie Macneill during the year Montgomery lived with her father in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Bolger also reprints stories and poems saved in L.M. Montgomery's early scrapbooks from the 1890s during her college years that illustrate her ascent up "The Alpine Path." In addition, Bolger draws from a series of letters written by Montgomery to her longtime penpal Ephraim Weber to provide a greater understanding of the author.

Here is the book's description from its back cover:

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) is best known for Anne of Green Gables, first published in 1908, but her literary career was firmly established before this endearing novel brought her international acclaim. Her letters to her friends Penzie Macneill and Ephraim Weber add a rich dimension to her character, while her short stories, serials, and poems illustrate the gradual unfolding of a remarkable talent.

Her family and island life contributed immensely to this literary development. The Montgomerys, who were at the heart of the island's social and political life, provided the subject matter, while her talent for writing came from her mother's family, the Macneills, who produced writers, poets, and satirists. And of growing up surrounded by the pastoral beauty of the countryside and the sparkling waters of the sea, she wrote, "Were it not for those Cavendish years, I do not think Anne of Green Gables would ever have been written."

Francis W. P. Bolger, who teaches history at the University of Prince Edward Island, has compiled an informative and complete picture of the fascinating life and brilliant career of Lucy Maud Montgomery, drawing on her scrapbooks, letters, diaries, photos and conversations with family members.

The Blue Castle

The Blue Castle, McClelland Stewart, 1926

L.M. Montgomery wrote The Blue Castle in 1926. It is her only novel fully set outside of her beloved Prince Edward Island and was her first attempt at an adult novel. Set in Muskoka, Ontario, The Blue Castle describes the life of twenty-nine year old Valancy Stirling. Valancy escapes her drab and sorrowful world with imaginary escapes to her Blue Castle in Spain where she is beautiful, charming, admired, and loved—everything her true life lacks.

When diagnosed with a heart ailment, Valancy's complaisance is shattered and she rebels, wanting to "live" for a short time before she dies. She finally breaks from her shell, saying and doing exactly as she pleases. L.M. Montgomery's story of Valancy's revolt against the Stirling clan, her new life, and growing love for the swarthy, unacceptable Barney Snaith is a modern fairy tale.

The Story of L. M. Montgomery: Author of Anne of Green Gables

The Story of L. M. Montgomery: Author of Anne of Green Gables by Hilda M. Ridley

The Story of L. M. Montgomery: Author of Anne of Green Gables by Hilda M. Ridley is the first published biography of the Canadian author. This biography of L.M. Montgomery was published in 1956 by The Ryerson Press in Canada and by G.G. Harrap in England. At the time, both publishing houses were reprinting L.M. Montgomery's books, and the biography served as a tie-in to introduce young readers to the author's life and career.

Hilda M. Ridley researched L.M. Montgomery's family history and her life in P.E.I. and Ontario. In preparing the book, she met with many friends and relatives of the late L.M. Montgomery. In her acknowledgments, Ridley thanked Mrs. George Campbell and her son, James Townsend Campbell of Park Hill, P.E.I. for providing her with valuable information and for letting her use “The Alpine Path,” L.M. Montgomery’s sketch of her early life and career, which was published in Everywoman’s World of Toronto in 1917. Ridley acknowledged L.M Montgomery’s son Chester Cameron Macdonald, Q.C., of Toronto, for providing the photographs used in the book and for sharing information about his mother’s life in Leaskdale, Norval, and Toronto, Ontario.

Hilda M. Ridley went on to thank:

"Mrs. R. E. Mutch, of Charlottetown, P.E.I., lifelong friend of L. M. Montgomery.
Miss Jean Gill, Librarian of the Legislative and Public Library of Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Mrs. Harlan Found, of Charlottetown, P.E.I., whose summer cottage is the house at Clifton, P.E.I., where L. M. Montgomery was born.
Mrs. R. J. Austin, of Kingston, Ont., who nursed Mrs. Ewan Macdonald at Leaskdale Manse when her second son, Stuart, was born.
Mrs. J. A. McClintock and Mrs. Mark Weldon, of Uxbridge, Ont., members of The Hypatia Club, of which Mrs. Ewan Macdonald was for several years the Honorary President.
Mrs. J. E. Mustard, of Uxbridge, Ont., who was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Leaskdale, Ont., when the Rev. Ewan Macdonald was pastor.
Mrs. R. F. Willis, of Uxbridge, a good friend of the Macdonald family.
Mrs. D. C. MacGregor (Marian Keith), who knew L. M. Montgomery well when she lived at Leaskdale, Norval, and Toronto, Ont."

Marian Keith, along with Mabel Burns McKinley, co-authored the book Courageous Women with L.M. Montgomery in 1934.

Here is the description of the book from its inner jacket:

L.M. Montgomery
A biography by Hilda M. Ridley

Lucy Maud Montgomery was born November 20 [sic; 30], 1874 at Clifton, Prince Edward Island. When she was a year old her mother died and she was brought up by her grandparents at Cavendish, P.E.I. Quite early in life, she began to show signs of literary talent, winning a short story contest sponsored by the Montreal Star at the age of twelve. In 1890, when she was sixteen, she spent a year at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan with her father, who had married again. After returning to the Maritimes and attending Dalhousie University for a winter, she took on a teaching job at Bideford and later at Ellerslie in P.E.I.

When she returned to Cavendish at the age of twenty, she met the Reverend Ewan Macdonald whom she married in 1911. They had two sons. The Macdonalds moved to Ontario and finally to Toronto, where they lived from 1935 to 1942, when L. M. Montgomery (Mrs. Macdonald) died in April of that year.

Mark Twain once called Anne of Green Gables, "the sweetest creation of child life yet written," and its immense popularity even today is proof that many people, like Mark Twain, have fallen under the spell of L.M. Montgomery's talent. In this biography Hilda Ridley offers an intimate retrospective of the life and career of Canada s most widely read author. All of the people and places, so well-known to anyone who has encountered them in the stories, take on another dimension. The delightful and the sad events that shaped the character and writing of Lucy Maud Montgomery are recounted in this story of a young girl growing up to become a world-famous writer.
